Cumin seeds can help flatulence, indigestion, diarrhea, nausea, morning sickness. Jeera water, water boiled with Cumin seeds/Jeera, is used in India to aid digestion, give relief from stomach aches and treat flatulence. Cumin tea is used to soothe stomach problems mainly due to indigestion.

Cumin seeds also stimulate the production of enzymes which help the body to break down protein, fat, sugar and starch. Cumin seeds are considered to be good tonic for liver and kidney.  Cuminaldehyde, Thymol and phosphorus in cumin seeds are considered good de-toxicants and help the liver to flush toxins from the body

Boost Immunity

Cumin seeds are rich in iron. They also contain considerable amount of vitamin-C, which are essential for a good immunity and preventing infections. Black cumin seeds along with garlic are considered to boost immunity.

Sleep Inducing / Relaxant

Cumin acts as stimulant as well as relaxant simultaneously. Studies show that a proper intake of vitamins (particularly B-complexes) and a good digestion help induce a sound sleep. Cumin helps both of these. Some components of Cumin seed oil are hypnotic and produce tranquilizing effects. In Ayurveda medicine, cumin seed powder along with ripe banana taken before sleep would induce calm sleep.

Antiseptic/Antifungal/Antiviral properties of Cumin seeds

Various essential oils in Cumin seeds are supposed to have antiseptic, antifungal and anti viral properties. Cumin is used to fight viral infections which cause common cold. Cumin tea along with little ginger is effective on sore throat. Cumin seed paste is effective on boils when applied topically. Inhaling cumin vapors can help to relieve sinusitis.

Cumin seeds are also effective on various skin disorders. Various essential oils in cumin with anti microbial and antifungal properties, prevents skin infection.

Anti carcinogenic properties

Cumin acts as detoxifying agent and accelerates secretion of detoxifying and anti-carcinogenic enzymes from the glands. It also contains Vitamin C and Vitamin A, which acts as anti-oxidants. Due to these properties, cumin seeds are considered to prevent Cancer. However, research is yet to confirm anti carcinogenic properties.

High Iron content

 Iron rich, cumin seeds are helpful in treatment of Anemia. Cumin should be added to daily diet of people suffering from anemia.
High iron and calcium content in cumin seeds is good for lactating mothers, pregnant women or women undergoing menses. Thymol in Cumin seeds also increase secretion of milk in lactating women. 10 gram of Cumin has remarkable amount of calcium, contributing to 10% of daily calcium requirement. Hence cumin is very good for lactating mothers. Cumin seeds, along with milk and honey, are recommended for pregnant women, as they help in the healthy development of foetus, facilitate easy child birth and also boost the quantity of breast milk secretion.

Other health benefits of Cumin Seeds

Cumin seeds are also helpful in treating diseases like asthama, arthritis, Piles. Cumin improves memory and overall mental function, and helps in recovery from amnesia.
